🇦🇺 #39 for two overnight stays was the Croydon Freedom Campground which looked promising and did not disappoint. So we left Karumba Point towards Normanton which is a nice country town and what we like about Queensland is the wide wide roads. We were hoping to see the old Gulflander Train which runs between Normanton and Croydon and Oh Boy were we lucky because we saw it at a stop in Blackbull Siding which is where it used to get water in the olden days. It was parked their carrying a group of tourists which had a scheduled morning tea stop. Picture time for us. The history and the actual train is very interesting. And before we knew we were back on the road on route to Croydon where we had to book into the Information Centre to get our ticket for the campground in exchange for a donation. That visit was so worth it, full of history, a video screening about the local history, loads of reading plaques and displays, mining museum and all that just at the Visitor Centre.

🇦🇺 So we were told that some Bikies had a charity run in town but they would stay at the Rodeo site. We don’t have a problem with Bikies so off we went to set up camp. Mmhhh it was a HUGE campground and we happily set up our camp with only one more caravan there. Well … and then they started rolling in, one bike after another, the sounds of motorbikes everywhere, 50, 100, 150 and counting. It ended up being 360 Bikies all over town and at least 300 in our campground. We felt very safe, very protected and were actually expecting loud music and stuff but it was all very subdued and quiet. Lots of alcohol was flowing however. The next morning they all left with an enormous amount of engines roaring and within 1 hour they were all gone. All but one. A swag and some gear including a helmet but no bike was left in the middle of the campground. In the end we learned that he actually had tyre problems and the support truck was fixing his bike before he also took off and followed his mates.

🇦🇺 After they all left and we had some peace and quiet, we decided to do some local sightseeing. At 42 degrees, this was no easy venture but we like exploring so off we went. Lake Belmore is set up nicely with barbecue area, playground, amenities and a nice spot to cool down with a swim (which we did not do because of the crocs). Diehm’s Lookout, the Outdoor Mining Museum (bit disappointing as nothing was explained) and the Chinese Temple Site (not much left but at least one could read the plaques). Best of all: The local Swimming Pool is free for all to use complete with a life guard. Perfect spot to finish off the day before a nice meal at the pub. Conclusion: We loved Croydon, the local council has done well in maintaining the old houses and turning them into museums for the public and tourists to enjoy! One of our favourite country towns. There is even a Dump Site as well as Drinking Water at any public tap in town. Well done Croydon!

Note 1 Croydon!

🇦🇺 40. Stop was the Undara Experience and the known and impressive Lava tunnels. Oh boy were we looking forward to that one. We travelled the Savannah Way, also called National Highway 1 or Gulf Developmental Road. Interesting road but nothing much to report. Went through Georgetown and Mount Surprise (worst coffee ever) before turning off the highway towards the volcano region and the Lava tunnels. Bit of dirt road but nothing to drastic before reaching the caravan park and being greeted by a kangaroo and its joey. The set up was quite impressive with old train wagons and the appropriate seats being transformed into an outstanding restaurant setting in the middle of the bush. This entire experience was overwhelming with the extend of the volcano eruption and the following flow of the lava just beyond words. The sheer size of the tunnels and the mass of lava that must have flown is unreal. Together with the flora and fauna of the region, it’s just WOW. Check out the links and pictures to understand what I mean. To explain the entire thing would just be way too long and I would be raving on about it.

🇦🇺 We had two nice dinners there although the second one was not quite as good but one had to watch the Kookaburra because it would steal the food from your plate if you were not careful. So the on the morning we were leaving, we had booked a bush breakfast which was very authentic complete with toast being roasted over the fire, coffee from a billy, crisp bacon and eggs, again in the middle of the bush. Loved it.

🇦🇺 I do apologize if this Part drags on but there is just so much to tell because so much has happened and while telling the story we really do live it again even though when writing this, we are already half way down to Brisbane so there is a lot to come in the following parts.

🇦🇺 41. Stop Archer Creek. We left Undara and continued our travels on the highway towards Cairns but not before doing the Walk on the Kalkani Volcano, visiting the Innot Hot Springs, which were so hot one could actually not go in and a little dog had burnt its pawed jumping in thinking it was just water. We heard about Archer Creek from some other travellers and decided to stay the night. It was very close to the highway and we had a bit of road noise but overall a very nice free campground.

🇩🇪 41. Stop Archer Creek.

🇦🇺 Next Stop and #42 is Cairns but Oh Boy, the road to there was bitumen but had a crunt to it. Not even 150 km to go, easy peezy we thought. Well, think again. Onto the Highway and off via Ravenshoe to Malanda. Breakfast Time. And then Geena GPS (our navigation system) sent us on a wild ride. She got us to get off the highway and lead us through more then one winding road to one lane roads via more narrow, very narrow winding roads through the Atherton tablelands (which we thought would be flat) through and what seemed over the mountains back to the Highway. We had to stop to take a breath because with the caravan which is 9 m long plus the Landcruiser, this was one heck of a ride. Why Geena GPS did that, no idea but she did and we did not know any better being unfamiliar with this area. It was a difficult drive but the landscape was more then stunning and we are glad we did it, well, now that we are through it

🇦🇺 The rest of the way to Cairns was a breath and we were glad to arrive at the Crystal Cascade Caravan Park, north of cairns and set up camp. But that’s another story and the next Part “Cairns”
